Linux Workstation: Intel Canyon NUC6i7KYK

I use a Intel Skull Canyon NUC6i7KYK as a Linux workstation since the end of 2018.

Inside the NUC6i7KYK

Configuration:

  • 32Gig RAM
  • 2x m.2 drives (1Gig each)
  • Linux Mint 19.1 Cinnamon
  • 2 Displays at 2560x1440:
    • 1x HDMI
    • 1x USB-C to HDMI

NUC6i7KYK Ports (rear)

Pro:

  • easy assembly, just install RAM and drives
  • Linux works out of the box, no issues
  • plenty of power for day to day operations
  • small form factor, tiny case, easy to hide

Contra:

  • noisy CPU fan, spins up as soon load increases
  • CPU fan needs cleaning every 6-12 months
  • Wifi/Bluetooth antenna below main board
  • not your gaming PC

Recommendation:

If you don’t want to mess around with hardware and building a PC: yes. It works. If you know you get easily offended by the noise of a high pitching fan, don’t buy it. Build your own workstation in a case with plenty of airflow. The price would be about the same, excluding assembly time and shipping costs for all the parts.
